Why, hello to you too, Jimmy Carter.
Tomorrow, October 1, is the birthday of James Earl (that’s Jimmy to us) Carter, Jr. - 39th President of the United States.
Jimmy Carter was born on October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia. In 1946 he graduated from the Naval Academy and married Rosalynn Smith. In the Navy, Carter became a submariner, rising to the rank of lieutenant and eventually becaming senior officer of the second nuclear submarine, the Seawolf.
In 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected as U.S. President - the first to come from the Deep south since before the Civil War. In foreign affairs, his achievements included the Camp David Accords, and the Panama Canal and SALT II treaties.
After leaving office, the Carters founded the Carter Center in Atlanta through which they combat disease and poverty in developing countries and mediate conflicts worldwide. One week a year, Jimmy and Rosalynn volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
Jimmy Carter was awarded the Noble Prize for Peace in 2002.
